Protection from wax moth

The wax moth feeds on wax combs and their content. It drills its way through wax, thus destroying the comb. In order to avoid comb losses the wax moth should be controlled. There are different control methods. In the brochure "Protection of honey combs from moth damage“ the biology, prevention and control of the wax moth are described.

In Switzerland para-dichlorobenzene has been used for moth control for many years. The results of the Swiss canton chemists showed, that many Swiss honeys are contaminated by this insecticide. In the frame of Good Apicultural Practice there is no room for the application of para-dichlorobenzene. There is a tolerance level of 0.01 mg para-dichlorobenzene per kg of honey. Beekeepers should not use this product.
